Just Keep Calling! #getinvolved UN CRPD Treaty

(from Michael Farris): Daily update on the Senate/UN CRPD battle The Democratic leadership stalled on the treaty ratification on the UN CRPD today. They have not yet filed the cloture petition. That is required to take the second of three required votes. There is a two day waiting period after filing the cloture petition before a vote can be taken on that step. Then another 30 hours must pass. (I know this sounds like a Rube Goldberg scheme and it kinda is. Maybe there is an exception if a Senator hops across the Rotunda on a pogo stick. OK...humor period over...back to the analysis.) What does this mean? YOUR CALLS ARE MAKING A BIG DIFFERENCE. We converted one of the "Yes" votes to a promised "NO" vote on final passage. I don't want to reveal the name publicly so that Harry Reid can lean on them. There are others leaning our way also. Of course, we don't know if the other side has converted some of our votes. So, we absolutely have to keep th...

Update on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities #hslda

(from HSLDA)   Preliminary vote on the UN CRPD gives both hope and targets for more calls! Today the Senate took a preliminary vote on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The vote was on a “Motion to Proceed” which means that the Senate gave permission to begin debate to the treaty. As is often the case, this was a preliminary vote which tells us a great deal about the vote for final p assage. The vote was 61 to 36. Three Senators did not vote. Every Democratic senator voted for the treaty—Blumenthal (D-CT) was absent and not voting. The Republicans supplied several “Yes” votes for the Obama Administration on giving the UN some authority over America’s policies for disabled adults and children. The GOP senators supporting Obama’s UN push were: Ayotte (R-NH), Barrasso (R-WY), Brown (R-MA), Collins (R-ME), Hatch (R-UT), Lugar (R-IA), McCain (R-AZ), and Snowe (R-ME). Hatch was the biggest surprise in this group. Barrasso was a ...

Important Update: UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

From Michael Farris- TODAY, Monday, November 26, at 4:30 p.m., Senator Mike Lee, Rick Santorum, and I will hold a press conference concerning our efforts to stop US ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Obama Administration is going to make a concerted effort to get this treaty ratified during the lame duck session of Congress—probably before December 4. The Obama Administration’s claim is that this treaty will not change the law of the United States but will only ensure that when disabled Americans travel abroad that they will enjoy the same handicapped access they have here. This is double nonsense. First, ratified treaties are a part of the highest law of the land. (Read Article VI of the Constitution). Treaties override all state laws—and give Congress new and expanded jurisdiction when the treaties touch on matters that used to be within the control of the states. Education laws—including homeschooli...

What We Need Now ... Scholarship and Character!

Time and again I've listened to the naysayers "homeschooling is too hard"  it's too "teacher intensive"  and my favorite, "I don't have the time to learn something new!" All of these laments may be true in some regard (it is difficult to learn something new that is intensive and takes time)  but it is time for Christian mothers to step up to the plate and reclaim their American Christian history of learning to think and reason from the Scriptures and "by their own scholarship and character...effectively articulate and implement their knowledge in the family, the workplace, and civil government."1 What is learning ?  Webster's 1828 defines learning as, "Gaining knowledge by instruction or reading, by study, by experience or observation; acquiring skill by practice."  That sounds like work!  What we Christian mothers need is a Christian work ethic!  We need to embrace the "Christian charact...

Family Worship and the Restoration of the American Christian Home

"All great change in America begins at the dinner table." Ronald Reagan "The time has come to strengthen our American Christian homes and to return them to their historic role of building the foundations of America's Christian character."  Verna Hall How can the American Christian home return to its historic role of building the foundations of America's Christian character?  How can we effect great change in America "at the dinner table"?   Discipleship, homeschooling, church attendance are all good things.  What if as a Nation we restored (or established)  a habit of family worship?  Don't you fall in love with the sound of that?  I might say that most Christian women would love to see family worship time happen in their homes.  But, often times the demands of life take our eyes of Jesus and onto the "tyranny of the urgent."   We don't have time to worship, we don't know what it should look li...
