Christian Home Educators of KY Blog: Articles

Has Homeschooling Changed in the Last 30 + Years By: Debbie Woolett We started homeschooling in the early 80’s.  We knew this was what the Lord wanted for our family.   How would we get started?  Where would we get school books?  What was the Law?  Was it even legal?  What about Socialization?  We knew two families that were homeschooling, so that is where we started.  Both families were full time evangelist.  Their local school board had allowed them to  travel with their children using the secular curriculum publisher they recommended. They had no solid information to help us on our quest. Today we would contact a local Support Group or Home School State Organization such as Christian Home Educators of Kentucky (CHEK), or a Nationally known Organization which would supply us with more than enough information, but in the 1980’s most states had no official local support group or ...

Review: Parenting from the Heart by Marilyn Boyer

Reads Like a Friend You Have Over for Tea! by Gina Glenn This review is from: Parenting From the Heart (Paperback)   Parenting from the Heart by Marilyn Boyer is truly a work from HER heart. Her care and concern for the Mommies out there are evident in each of the 26 short, readable chapters. As a mom of 4 (all older now), I would've enjoyed having this book as my own children grew through the stages into adulthood. There was a time when a book was my only "friend" during the toddler years in the too-busy, pre-internet days! For the "modern" parent, this books keeps in mind how busy you are and keeps things short and encouraging without falling into the trap of becoming only a devotional. It really does read like a letter from a friend. Marilyn shares her own joys and sorrows along the way. As a Christian it is so important to have an "older" and "wiser" woman remind me of what and Whom I am working for...

CHEK Action Item: from HSLDA

Urgent Calls Needed—Congress Prepares to Tax Internet Sales Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: HSLDA President Mike Smith has been an advocate of homeschooling for more than 30 years. Read more >> Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, The U.S. Senate is preparing to vote on allowing taxation of internet sales. The vote will come as early as this afternoon. The bill is S. 743, the so-called “Marketplace Fairness Bill.” While this is not a homeschool issue, this legislation will directly affect HSLDA, as well as many homeschool families who operate home businesses and sell items online. Currently, a small business only needs to collect sales taxes in states where the business has a physical presence. The proposed Senate legislation will give the states the authority to force businesses to collect sales taxes from all online customers, even if the customer lives in a state where the small business has no physical presence. HSLDA believes that this will significantl...

#StopCommonCore Call your Senators

Please call your two U.S. senators and urge them to stop the Common Core Curriculum Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: HSLDA President Mike Smith has been an advocate of homeschooling for more than 30 years. Read more >> HSLDA strongly opposes the Common Core State Standards Initiative, and the curriculum, tests, and databases that are being created as part of this misguided attempt to nationalize our nation’s education system. You can read our recent article on the Common Core here , and our recent article on national databases here . You can watch a video interview of HSLDA’s Director of Federal Relations discussing the Common Core here . Thankfully, Senator Chuck Grassley (Iowa) understands the problems with the Common Core, and is urging his fellow senators to oppose the federal government’s funding and support of this nationalized curriculum. He is circulating a letter to senators urging them to sign onto the letter to stop the federal government’...

Common Core Standards, Why the Uproar?

President Obama's Race to the Top/Common Core National Education Standards Most states have already adopted it without the legislatures even discussing or voting. It must be stopped. They have a 4-year start on the citizenry, but it can be done. Indiana has done it. Texas did, but replaced it with something just as bad. So, be on the alert. Contact your state legislators now. Why the uproar? Highly sensitive and personal information of your school children (public, private, and homeschooled) will be gathered in Common Core's "Educational Data Mining" according to the Department of Education's draft report released in February. The data tracking of your child from kindergarten through high school graduation will consist of psychological, neurological, and behavioral testing including the use of magnetic resonance imaging ( MRI ), skin and brain sensors , mood meters, and facial expression cameras. "[E]motional experiences, physic...
